Covid-19 is a frightening, global and unpredictable pandemic. Some are recovering, and some are destroying the lungs fatally. We saw that not only the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions succumb to the virus. Is this horrifying pandemic and future global viral attacks possible - can we do more to protect ourselves? Let's look at the function of immune.
What we really need is an immune system that is balanced. Not only does the immune system not protect us from balance, it can even turn against us and mistake our own cells for pathogenic invasion (nasties), which leads to weaker chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, allergies are all examples. COVID-19 is a coronavirus disease. Human coronaviruses are common and are typically associated with mild, cold-like diseases.
The virus is known as 'novel,' because it was first transmitted to a human being and can now go from human to human. The virus' particular strain has never been seen in our immune systems before, so we have not developed immunity. It is probably more contagious than the influenza and common cold viruses because it's new to humans. There is no way for people to prepare for it, and their immunity is not ready to combat it. This leads to more cell damage and more inflammatory cells in the virus.
Many of the people who die in the new coronavirus pandemic seem to be more affected by their own immune system than by the virus itself. The inflammatory response of the immune system is seriously hazardous. Research at the University of Melbourne shows that "a robust immune response across different cell types was linked to clinical restoration." In people who recover, balanced immune response seems to be the key.
Doctors and researchers are growingly convinced that the body's own immune system reacts over the virus with a cytokine storm in at least some cases of Covid-19. An extreme response of the immune system causes more damage than the virus itself. Some physicians now use strong anti-inflammatory medicines to combat the virus. There are thousands of articles on chronic inflammation-related diseases with hundreds of studies. It seems that our survival or death of Covid-19 is linked to immune response and chronic inflammation as other diseases.
Covid-19 research is very recent. The whole world has pursued other research to save lives. We don't know so much, but we don't have the luxury of time. We must all do our best to protect ourselves, and we all have a social responsibility to do our best to prevent the pandemic from spreading. Again, many of us believe that we choose a healthy lifestyle, but we actually increase our oxidative stress levels that can lead to chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation and cytokine storms, as research increases, are linked to chronic disease and death. Research shows that Covid-19 is no exception.
